Colorado is one step closer to legalizing civil unions for same sex couples. Earlier tonight the House finance committee gave Senate Bill 2 approval: the second of three hurdles before the bill reaches the full House for a vote.
The bill would grant same sex couples inheritance rights, parental rights, and the ability to be involved in a partner's medical decisions. Opponents fear a lawsuit may be ahead if the bill passes; it could constitute grounds to change the state's constitution which defines marriage between a man and a woman. "The truth is civil unions have been used in other states as a battering ram to strike down laws like we passed here in the state of Colorado," Carrie Gordon Earll, a spokesperson for Focus on the Family told News 5.
Members of the LGBT community remain hopeful despite the controversy. "We're looking for equal rights. Nothing more, nothing less, just equal," Charles Irwin of the Colorado Springs Gay Pride Center said today.
If the bill reaches the House floor only one Republican would need vote in favor to get it to the governor's desk as all Democrats are expected to support the bill. If passed, Colorado will join more than a dozen states that allow gay marriage or civil unions.
