Icy chaos in Pueblo

Posted 4:13 PM 12/27/2011 : Councilman asks why streets weren't cleared

Pueblo City Councilman Leroy Garcia said this afternoon he'll ask why more wasn't done to clear the city's streets after last week's snow storms.

We got video of several cars sliding off road, into oncoming traffic and even an accident--a full four days after the last snow fell.

Garcia said he talked to the Assistant City Manager this morning about the issue and plans to bring it up at tonight's work session.

He said he got complaints about several streets including Prairie, Abriendo and Lake.

Posted 5:40 PM 12/26/2011 : Numerous drivers lose control on icy Pueblo road

A major road in Pueblo is a danger zone following two big snow storms. Layers of thick ice have formed over the past week, causing numerous wrecks and countless close-calls. Some are wondering why the City of Pueblo hasn't done more to clear Northern Ave.

Parts of Northern are an icy nightmare. "Look at this vehicle oh my god, it's out of control," said a passerby.

It was a cringing sight to watch as cars were slipping and sliding. "I've never seen it this bad and I've been here all my life actually. I've lived here all my life," said Paul Kendall, owner of Rocky Mountain Sports & Collectibles on Northern Ave. During our interview a driver lost control and crashed into another driver. "That was a bad one," said Kendall.

Drivers may have been caught off guard because some sections of Northern were bone dry. However, near Beulah Ave. where it's covered in shade there were thick layers of ice. "You just don't know what you're going to run into," said Kendall.

As our camera was rolling we also saw two drivers lose control and slid into the opposite lanes of traffic.
"Look at these roads. This is sad. We can't even drive on them," said the passerby.

Drivers and nearby merchants were stunned by the conditions because Northern Ave. is a major road on the south side for east and west-bound traffic. "I think it's a shame, they didn't get this plowed," said Kendall.

We saw a couple of snow plows scrapping off the ice, but some are wondering why the city hasn't done more. "We pay our taxes, come on Pueblo."

We tried to get answers, but city offices were closed for the holiday. We'll keep you posted.

Posted 12:53 PM 12/26/2011 : Super slick Northern Ave. an accident waiting to happen

Avoid Northern Ave. near Beulah Ave. in Pueblo if at all possible. The road is packed with ice and super slippery. At least two accidents happened earlier this morning and some drivers lost control and plowed into the opposite lanes of traffic.

Locals are upset the city streets division hasn't done more to remove the snow and ice. We saw two plows scaping the ice off Northern this morning, however city offices are closed so weren't able to get more information.
