Posted 6:43 PM 2/5/2013 : Cities make switch to newer street lights
Several communities in Southern Colorado are making the switch to more energy efficient street lights. Both Pueblo and Cripple Creek are looking to replace dozens of conventional street lights with LED lights.
These newer lights can cost about four times as much as the older lights, but on the bright side experts say they use about 60% less energy and last much longer. "The type of lights that are potentially being replaced have a life expectancy of 5 years, the new emerging technologies have a life of about 20 years," said Christopher Burke, Vice President of Operations for Black Hills Energy.
Meanwhile Colorado Springs has replaced nearly 400 street lights across the city. In the coming months they plan to add more LED lights along Tejon and around Acacia Park.
